What is offensive?
Well recently effected by what appears to have been a guild sweep a few 'offensivly' named guilds including one i was a member of have been banned/locked w/e you want to call it. I'm just curious how many people here would deem the following names offensive:
Thanks ~ Wipe

Totally Stupid thing to do. Complete sense of humor failure. What were the tag names?
AN allow the use of a character that be can used as a swastika but when people want some fun with tag names they ban because a few people decide to moan and see things that are not there.
They probably thought Camel humpers promoted bestiality, trojan protectors wrote computer virus's and terrorists were going to suicide bomb AN headquarters.
The rank 56 guild I feel most sorry for, it must have taken hours of GvG to get there.
I've heard and seen several strange and basically anal decisons from all over the game. E.g people being banned for sitting in Amtaz with henchies, or running fish over and over in case they are bots, the whole wall of silence re elite missions and grind vs skill. It does'nt seem to be the same AN we all knew
Each instance of this demonstrates that AN is changing from developers who are fans of the game and community players into faceless suits only concerned with the next chapter and raking in more dollars

the terrorist one i can understand; whilst it personally doesn't offend me, its not exactly a smart thing to be joking about right now.
Either way, Anet unfortunately will have to do this; if they get complaints they're going to act on them. At the end of the day they either get a few disgruntled complaints from a few guild members, or they get some ridiculous court case against them because 'Osama Binladen' was allowed to run around in GW unchecked. They're covering their own backs.

I think the Trojan Protection could have been mistaken for something a little less PC but with as much virus protection >_>
#643 had to know that they would get in trouble for that name... It is deffinately offensive to the general public.
Crazy Camel Humpers.... Constantly reminded me of the song "walk like a Camel" (not sure if that was the actual name or not but whatever)... I do feel for them though because of their high rank ;_;

Camel "humper" (to use the less offensive term) is a racial epiphet and they deserved to be banned for that.

People have to understand we live in an overly PC nanny state where offense can be, and frequently is taken over any silly little jibe. It's pathetic, but you have to protect yourself against hordes of care-bears by ensuring you project your online presence with as much punch as a cotton-wool ball. The guild owners must have seen this coming, especially when there are players being reported for as little as using the dance emote in close proximity to another's avatar.
Offensive? Don't make me laugh. Silly to expect to get away with it? Absolutely.

Yeah, I can understand that one being banned for racism.
The Trojan Protection Guild I thought was just silly and not really offensive. You'd probably have to be pretty uptight to have a problem with that one.
While I can appreciate the humor of being blatantly un-PC in The Federation of Active Terrorists, I guess I can understand why Anet would ban that one.

The swastika wasn't a symbol invented by Nazis. I don't know what language uses it, but it's a character in some legitimate alphabet.

As for the comment about the swastika. Please remember that the swastika is a religious symbol that the Nazi party 'borrowed' for their own use. It's pretty much the oldest known symbol in the world, older than the egyptian use of the ankh.

Camel Humper's, well I'd consider it moderately offensive as there really is only 2 ways that name can be taken. One is downright nasty, and the other is racist and very offensive. The other two are fine IMO. I'm not the one that makes the call though.
Of course, you haven't shared with us the 'offensive' name of your guild.

This one always makes me laugh. Just tell me what it does mean since national/local laws can be contradictory. Female characters shouldn't be allowed to go in town without a helm: they gotta wear a scarf in Iran.
On the other hand, I remember Gayle being asked about a guid with the swastika as a guild tag. She said she didn't find it offensive since it's also a hinduist symbol (and obviously this guild was more likely hinduist - yeah, of course...) so ANET won't do anything. But when you joke, you're banned.
Great!
EDIT - D'oh! 3 posts with the same example posted at the same time >.<

I believe what you are referring to is from the icelandic alphabet (tho I could be wrong lol).

Offensiveness is subjective. Still I think what we have here is a judicious case of CYA. Don't blame ANet. Blame the litigious society we live in. All it would take is one goober parent seeing one of those names and deciding their little darling shouldn't be exposed to such filth and bam lawsuit. Even if ANet won such a suit the court costs alone would be devestating. All the names were borderline stupid anyway, well one of them went over the line and firmly into moron territory. My suggestion? Try to come up with a good guild name instead of slapping up some childish crap that is basically asking to get e-spanked.

Man, I lived in India: you can see this symbol everywhere there: that's pretty strange first, even if you know that it's NOT a nazi symbol, but you get quickly used to it.
But please, don't be hypocritical, you do know that in a game called guild wars, players using this symbol as a guild tag most likely refer to the nazi symbol that to a peace and love approach of hinduism...

Americans have so many cool racial slurs. I once saw a guy who was crying because all his chars got banned and he didn't know why. It turned out that all of them had the word "Sambo" in them and the poor kid was unaware that "Sambo" is the 51249th way of saying "n****r".

That's quite an assumption, I believe the symbol is used as a part of non-western character sets in the game (eg. Taiwan). I don't know what the rest of the characters in their guild name mean, so I don't pretend to know the context in which they use it.
There was a thread about this a while back, and it was closed pretty quickly.
